Granzier Lab discovers that titin regulates thick filament length in striated muscle

A recent study published in Nature Communications by Dr. Paola Tonino and Dr. Balazs Kiss details their discovery that titin regulates thick filament length in striated muscle.  Thick filament length is precisely controlled and defines the force level that muscles generate. By genetically targeting titin’s super-repeats and performing an array of structural and functional studies, Paola and Balazs found that each of titin’s super- repeats is responsible for a quantal 43 nm thick filament length. Thus, thick filament length regulation is titin-based and maintains muscle health. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-017-01144-9
