The ability of the epithelial cells to serve as a selective barrier to pathogens while absorbing nutrients is fundamental to their function. Tight junctions and associated polarity complexes are critical for selective permeability and maintenance of epithelial polarity. Our investigations of epithelial development and polarity focus on membrane trafficking to the junctions and apical membrane.
